Ustad Rafat Khan Niazi (Sitar Maestro)

Introduction

It is hardly a matter of surprise that Rafat Khan, took to music at an early age, like a proverbial fish to water. Rafat Khan is the younger son of Gayan Samrat Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan Dilrang. He has inherited the talent of different Gharanas with which his father was associated. These Gharanas are the Khurja, Atrauli (Jaipur) and Agra. Rafat Khan belongs to these legendary Gharanas, which has given India such giants as Ustad Allahdiya Khan, Haji Ustad Altaf Hussain Khan, Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan, Ustad Fayyaz Khan, Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan, Ustad Wahid Hussain Khan and many other. Rafat Khan's own Gharana originates from the Daguri Bani. Besides being great vocalists, two of his forefathers were Beenkars. Rafat Khan's grand father Ustad Khairat Ali Khan, was an ascetic person, besides being an excellent sitar player.

 

Rafat Khan was born, brought up and educated in Bombay. He has been the recipient of many prestigious music scholarships. He has won several music competitions in his early years. This talented young artist has won popularity steadily. In his music appearances he has proved a great perception, chastity, and involvement in sitar playing. The confidence, stage presence presentation, perfect technique and concentration are the major qualities in Ustad Rafat Khan's performance which no doubt indicate his great musical heritage, and his association with his guru Pandit Arvind Parikh. Rafat Khan also has the benefits of musical grooming under his maternal uncle Ustad Aslam Khan, the veteran exponent of the Khurja, Atrauli, and Agra Gharanas.

 

Rafat Khan started his initial training in vocal music and sitar from his father Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan Sahab, at an early age of eight years. After the demise of his father in 1975 he became the pupil of the great Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahab, who was a legend in sitar playing. After that from the year 1976 he has been receiving an intensive training in sitar from Pandit Arvind Parikh. Under the able tutelage of Pandit Arvind Parikh, Rafat has groomed into a fullfledge and mature sitar player, and his talent has blossomed to the full extent.

 

Rafat Khan is an extremely talented sitarist. His style of performance is unique and extraordinarily appealing. He captures the attention of the audiences by his beautiful performance. He is good in all the aspects of the traditional sitar playing techniques. Rafat Khan has performed in many prestigious music conferences, and sammelans, throughout India and abroad. He has accompanied and also performed with his Guru Pandit Arvind Parikh, in Europe, America, London, East-West Germany, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Holland, Rotterdam U.A.E. and Pakistan. In the year 1993 Ustad Rafat Khan did a very successful tour of Qatar, Bahrain, Doha and Syria sponsored by ICCR. Rafat khan is an excellent teacher also and is actively associated with Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan and Sangeet Research Academy. In the year 2000, 2002 and 2004 respectively. He had an extensive tour of Sri Lanka, South Africa, Burma and Afghanistan. In the year 2005 he toured Nagoya(Japan) for a concert series in expo. It was sponsored by ICCR.

 

Rafat Khan has been appointed as a music professor in London Music School several times and also gave advanced training in Sitar at Nairobi Kenya. He has trained a number of Indian students in India and abroad.

 

Ustad Rafat Khan has composed music for T.V. plays, dramas, musical plays and fusion groups. He is a wonderful accompaniment in film songs & recordings.
